Since 2016, our sister organisation, Mahitahi Trust, has worked towards a vision of providing affordable, secure housing for whānau alongside its established mental health and wellbeing services.

This vision was realised in 2018 when Mahitahi Trust achieved Community Housing Provider (CHP) status, leading to the establishment of Mahitahi Kāinga Trust as a Kaupapa Māori Community Housing Provider. This marked an important step in broadening the support available to whānau and recognising the vital connection between safe, stable housing and wellbeing.

A significant milestone followed in February 2021 with the official opening of Kōtukutuku Papakāinga. More than simply providing houses, the development created a place where whānau could experience security, connection and a genuine sense of belonging.

The opening represented years of commitment and collective effort to turn a shared vision into reality. Today, Kōtukutuku Papakāinga reflects our ongoing commitment to creating welcoming, affordable homes and strengthening communities where whānau can thrive.

Through Mahitahi Kāinga Trust, we continue to build on this kaupapa — supporting whānau through housing that fosters stability, wellbeing and connection.
